The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has created a tool to help farmers assess the impact that Brexit could have on their business. Anna Tobin reports
The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has designed the Brexit Impact Calculator to forecast how different Brexit scenarios could impact on farming businesses. The calculator creates reports based on three possible Brexit scenarios.
Scenario 1 is that there will be a full and comprehensive free-trade agreement with the EU and support payments will stay at the current level. Scenario 2 is that there will be no free-trade agreement with the EU, but that the UK will unilaterally lower all agricultural tariffs to zero. In this eventuality, the level of support will be reduced by 50% and permanent labour costs will rise. Scenario 3 is that there will be no free-trade agreement with the EU and that the UK will adopt current EU tariff levels on all agricultural trade. In this case, the level of support will be reduced by 75% and permanent and casual labour costs will rise.
To use this tool those in the farming industry need to enter the input and output data for their business by the hectare or by enterprise. Those that don’t have this data at hand to input can use the default sector averages for their farming business.
